The opening of 'Tjing's Jungle School'

Do what wild animals need and do in the forest; learn to climb, discover natural foods and learn survival skills.

In the Sumatra Wildlife Center, we care for almost 200 hundred confiscated wild animals, most of them are primates like reptiles, gibbons, long tailed macaques, slow lorises, and leaf monkeys.

It's our aim to release the animals back to the wilderness, but as we care for mostly young orphans this is a long and very challenging process. Usually, baby primates and other wild animals would learn the skills of survival in the rainforests from their parents, especially their mother.

We wish to highlight a very special individual, a little sunbear named Mano. Confiscated by the national police and our team from the illegal wildlife trade, with two traders arrested, the tiny bear weighing less than an adult cat was taken into our care. Mano is a special case, and needs much attention as she normally would still be with her mother who would teach her the skills of the forest. Now, that’s up to us and therefore we are creating a jungle school in the nearby forest specially for Mano. Another baby bear named Henri is awaiting rescue and will soon be able to socialize with little Mano. At least they will have each other.

The jungle school will allow orphaned wild animals like Mano to do what wild animals need and do in the forest; learn to climb, discover natural foods and learn survival skills.

For orphans like Mano, we need a full time caretaker who serves as a foster mum, to walk with the baby bear and guide her safely through the dense forest. Other rescued wild animals in our care undergoing rehabilitation, like orphaned primates, also have a better chance to become independent when they can be transferred to jungle school.

The Jungle School Camp is set to be completed in October 2024, made possible by the generous donation from our dear friend Tjing.

Tjing (in memoriam) had a big heart for the animals and she has helped and supported JAAN since the start. Tjing was an active animal activist, informing people about veganism, animal abuse and the need to share kindness to all.

She is truly missed and with the support she left us, Jungle School has been constructed and can be operational, where many animals will be given the chance to go free.

Therefore we name this important project ‘Tjing’s Jungle School’  which was finalized in October 2024.

Part of the ongoing operational costs of this important project to help free Mano the bear and many others,  are sponsored by T&S Suites Hotel from Seminyak, Bali.
