Improving the welfare of Indonesian wildlife

JAAN was established in May 2004 in the Netherlands to support wildlife rescue work in Indonesia and officially in Indonesia in February 2008 as a central place where people could report cases of animal abuse or find out information about animal welfare in Indonesia.

Since 2008, we have grown significantly. We now have a team of 80 (mostly local) professionals and we run 7 different wildlife programs and assist the authorities throughout Indonesia to combat wildlife crime. We operate solely on donations from individuals and do not receive any financial support from the government.

Mission

Our mission is to improve the welfare of Indonesian wildlife

At JAAN, we envision a world where all animals are treated with compassion and respect. Our mission is to protect animals from cruelty and exploitation, and to promote animal welfare through proactive measures and community involvement. We believe that education and awareness are key to driving change and fostering a society that values and protects its animal inhabitants.

approach

Education, advocacy, rescue, and rehabilitation

We are increasingly focusing on the origin of the animal suffering: the trade in wild animals. Stopping and prosecuting smugglers is a first important step in stopping illegal animal trade. By tackling the problem at the source, we hope that animals will no longer be available on the market in the future. We do this by lobbying for stricter penalties and laws through petitions and frequent conversations with the national police, with whom we have a good relationship.

Over the past 15 + years we have created a large network of partners, foundations and (local) governments. For example, we work together with the following governmental authorities:
1. Indonesian National Police
2. Ministry of Forestry and Environment
3. Existing animal welfare and rescue, rehabilitation and release centers, both on national and international level

Collaboration is at the heart of JAAN's approach. We work closely with local communities, government agencies, and international organizations to amplify our impact. Through workshops, educational programs, and advocacy campaigns, we empower individuals to take action and be a voice for the voiceless.
